How to Prepare for Termite Fumigation

Preparing your home for fumigation is a crucial step to ensure the process is safe and effective. Our team provides clear guidance to make it simple for you to get everything ready. Follow these steps to protect your belongings and streamline the treatment process.

Plan for Temporary Relocation

Arrange accommodations for your family and pets for two nights. All pets, including fish, must be removed from the property before fumigation begins.

Secure Food and Personal Items

All food, medications, and personal care products must be placed in special fumigation bags provided by our team or removed from the home. Be sure to seal these items properly to prevent exposure to the fumigant.

Prepare the Exterior of Your Home

Trim shrubs and move outdoor furniture or items at least 12 inches away from the structure. Unlock gates and ensure clear access to the property for our technicians.

Ready the Interior

Open all doors, cabinets, and drawers to allow the fumigant to circulate thoroughly. Remove all plants from the home and garage to ensure their safety.

Coordinate Gas Shutoff

Your local gas company will turn off the gas on the morning of the fumigation. Leave the tag on the meter in place as confirmation that the gas line is inactive.

Our licensed technicians are here to assist with any questions and provide step-by-step instructions, ensuring your home is fully prepared for the fumigation process.

Our 3-Day Fumigation Process

Fumigation is the most effective way to eliminate termites, reaching deep into every corner of your home. The process takes three days, during which you’ll need to arrange accommodations for two nights.

Day One: Preparation and Treatment

Your gas company will turn off the gas between 7 AM and 11 AM and place a safety tag on your meter. Our licensed technicians will then cover your home with secure tarps. After confirming all people, pets, and unsealed items are removed, the fumigator releases sulfuryl fluoride gas to penetrate the wood and eliminate termites.

Day Two: Aeration

Our team will inspect the tarps and begin aerating your home by installing ventilation fans and exhaust systems to safely remove the fumigant.

Day Three: Clearance and Reentry

The tarps are removed, and air quality testing ensures your home is safe. Once cleared, a “Re-Entry” notice is placed on your door, confirming the exact time your home is ready for return.

With the fumigation complete, you can return to a termite-free home with total peace of mind.

Vikane Gas Fumigant: The Gold Standard for Termite Elimination

Vikane gas fumigant is a trusted and proven solution for eliminating termites, offering unparalleled effectiveness in treating infestations throughout your entire home. This odorless and colorless gas penetrates deeply into wood and other structural materials, ensuring termites are eradicated at all life stages, from eggs to adults.

Why Choose Vikane Gas Fumigant?

  • Complete Elimination: Vikane’s powerful formula targets termites where they live, including hard-to-reach areas that other treatments can’t access.
  • Non-Staining and Residue-Free: Unlike some treatments, Vikane leaves no stains or residues, ensuring your home is as clean as it is pest-free.
  • Safe and Regulated: When applied by licensed professionals, Vikane is both safe and highly effective, with strict protocols ensuring the safety of your home and family.
  • Eco-Conscious Choice: Vikane breaks down quickly after ventilation, leaving no long-term environmental impact.

Common Termite Fumigation Questions

How much does termite treatment cost?

It depends on the treatment type and the extent of the infestation. Fumigation pricing is based on your home's cubic footage (call with your address for a ballpark), while localized treatment pricing depends entirely on what's found during inspection — we don't estimate it sight-unseen.

How soon can I move back in after fumigation?

Once the home has aerated and passes clearance testing, we will remove the tent, certify the structure as safe, and post a Safe for Re-Entry Notice on the front door. We recommend returning to your home in the afternoon on your scheduled re-entry day. The homeowner is responsible for contacting the gas company at least 48 hours in advance to schedule gas restoration. Be sure to request an afternoon appointment, as the home must first be certified safe for re-entry. Do not remove the Safe for Re-Entry Notice from your front door until after the gas company arrives, as they will not enter the property if the notice is missing.

Who manages the fumigation process from start to finish?

We manage the entire fumigation process from start to finish. Your Transaction Coordinator and inspector will be your primary point of contact throughout the process. They coordinate scheduling with the fumigation crew, collect all required documents and authorizations, provide preparation instructions, and keep you informed every step of the way to ensure everything stays on track.

When is fumigation the right call instead of spot treatment?

Fumigation is typically recommended when drywood termites are found in multiple areas of the home or when they are suspected to be hidden inside walls, attics, eaves, or other inaccessible areas where localized treatment cannot reach. If the infestation is limited to one or two accessible areas, localized treatment is often the more practical and less disruptive option.

How much does fumigation cost?

Fumigation pricing is based primarily on the cubic footage of your home, which determines the amount of tarping and fumigant required. Our fumigations also include a 5-year warranty, providing long-term protection and added peace of mind. Call us at (877) TERMITE | (877) 837-6483 with your address, and we can provide a ballpark estimate before scheduling your inspection.

Does fumigation leave any residual protection?

No. Once the fumigation is complete and the home has been properly aerated, the fumigant gas completely dissipates and leaves no residue on your furniture, clothing, dishes, or other household items. Because the gas leaves no residue, there is no need to clean your home after fumigation beyond your normal routine. For added peace of mind, our fumigations are backed by a 5-year warranty, giving you continued protection long after the process is complete.

Does fumigation come with a warranty?

Yes, every fumigation we perform is backed by a 5-year warranty against drywood termites.

Is fumigation safe for pets and plants?

People, pets, and houseplants must be removed from the home before fumigation and can return only after the structure has been cleared as safe. Outdoor plants and landscaping are generally not affected, as long as they are not enclosed under the fumigation tarp.

What do I need to do to prepare my home for fumigation?

You'll need to remove or properly double-bag certain food and medications and make arrangements for all people and pets to be out of the home during the fumigation. We will coordinate with the gas company to have your gas service shut off before fumigation. After the fumigation is complete, the homeowner is responsible for scheduling the gas service to be restored. We'll provide a complete preparation checklist and guide you through every step before your scheduled date.

How long does fumigation take?

Most residential fumigations take 3 days and 2 nights to complete. Weekend fumigations typically take 4 days and 3 nights, since crews do not work on Sundays. The process includes tent installation, fumigation, aeration, and final clearance. You must remain out of the home until the fumigator has certified that it is safe to re-enter.

How does termite fumigation work?

The entire structure is enclosed in a tarp, and a fumigant gas is introduced to penetrate every void in the wood, eliminating drywood termites throughout the structure — not just in the spots you can see. It's the only treatment that reaches termites hidden deep inside walls, eaves, and framing that can't be directly accessed for spot treatment.

What should I expect on the day of my appointment?

Our technician will call or text ahead, walk the property with you if you're home, and explain findings and next steps in plain language before leaving you with a written report. There's no pressure to decide on treatment on the spot — you'll have the information you need to make the right call for your home.

What's not covered under a typical termite warranty?

Warranties typically exclude new damage caused by structural changes made after treatment, conditions an inspector couldn't access, and situations where required follow-up inspections were skipped. Specific terms are spelled out in writing with every warranty we issue.

Are warranties transferable if I sell my home?

Yes. Our warranties stay with the property, not the homeowner, so they can be transferred to the new owner when the home is sold. A transferable termite warranty can be a valuable selling point, giving buyers added confidence that the home remains protected.

What's covered under your fumigation warranty?

Our fumigation treatments come with a 5-year warranty against drywood termites, so if the same type of infestation returns to the treated structure within that period, we'll address it under the warranty terms provided in writing at the time of treatment.
